  • Reading: Ezra 4, Acts 4
  • Finished Nathan Coulter by Wendell Berry

Nathan Coulter was a pretty quick read. It’s the first book Berry wrote set in his Port William fictional region. I’m not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, he does a good job of making you feel the beauty of the land. He also does a good job of making you feel the loneliness – and perhaps futility – these characters feel living on that land.

I could have cried myself. Brother was gone, and he wouldn’t be back. And things that had been so before never would be so again. We were the way we were; nothing could make us any different, and we suffered because of it. Things happened to us the way they did because we were ourselves. And if we’d been other people it wouldn’t have mattered.
